Greetings Mike! This post really hits home. God has been working in this area of my life for some time now. We just spent 6 months stateside. Before going to the States we “purged” our house of more than 25 boxes of “stuff” that was mostly “junk” to us but could be used by others. Upon arriving back home to Ecuador last week we were assailed by all the stuff we had left behind that we didn’t want or need and began the purging anew. However, God’s conviction at just how much more I need to grow in this area came as I remembered how upset I was (and still am to some degree) at the two suitcases full of stuff I had bought that had to be left behind because we were not allowed extra baggage on the airlines we were flying. One does not realize how deeply the roots of Mammon go (and I equate consumerism with Mammon as well as money in general) until one starts trying to be obedient to God and His teachings on money and possessions. I, for one, still struggle with this, even though my possessions are not as great as the average American. I still have yet to reach God’s level that I believe He wants for me.
